Thoughts:
I’ve enjoyed previous books by the author, so a few years ago I picked up Americans at War by Stephen E. Ambrose. This an excellent introduction to US history when at war.
This is not a comprehensive book, and it is not meant to be one. It’s a quick primer for those interested in the subject and would give one a sense of what they would like to read next. For me, it was the American Civil War which I started reading about profusely.
The book addresses many subjects, from General Patton on his deathbed, to the atomic bomb and Vietnam, as well as the Cold War.
Mr. Ambrose has a wonderful sense of history, he is not afraid to admit his mistakes, and does not criticize. I might not agree with every conclusion he draws, but that’s what makes life interesting.
