Tightwad Tuesday — Affordable eBooks — International Cookbooks
Latest Posts , Tightwad Tuesday / March 19, 2013

I suddenly developed an interest in cooking. Not your everyday variety, but a few things which are a hit in our house and in parties. I make a great BBQ eggplant sandwich, decadent pear with bacon appetizer (goat cheese and honey … it works) and am the master of all omelettes.  Being raised outside of the US usually  means that you get used to unheard ingredients like “fresh vegetables” and “crap free meat” and such other hard to find items. My beloved wife (may she live a long life) is a most excellent cook and baker and is always on the lookout for new, healthy recipes. Which means that her cheapskate of a husband is always on the lookout for free cookbooks. Being  kind-hearted-cheap-man I am sharing some of my great finds with you today. Tightwad Tuesday — Affordable eBooks — World War II
Latest Posts , Tightwad Tuesday / January 29, 2013

This week I thought I’ll find some free books dealing with World War II. If you follow this blog you know that I read a lot of WWII books, I find that period in history both horrifying and fascinating at the same time. With each book I read, I discover something new, some new fact or story. There were tremendous acts of disgrace and horror, but also many acts (unfortunately not as many) of humanity and kindness. At the time of this post, the books below were free or $2.99 — please check before downloading.         The Battle of Stalingrad: A Very Brief History by Mark Black Digital List Price: $2.99 Kindle Price: $0.00 includes free wireless delivery via Amazon Whispernet You Save: $2.99 (100%) Want to learn more about history, but don’t think you have the time? Think again. The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the most important campaigns of the war in Europe, inflicting huge losses on the German forces; losses from which they never really recovered. This is the story of a battle raged for almost seven months, and was often fought from street to street, with soldiers engaged in close quarters combat. By the end, the number…

Tightwad Tuesday — Free or Affordable eBooks — The American Civil War
Latest Posts , Tightwad Tuesday / September 25, 2012

There was a time when i was absolutely fascinated by the American Civil War. I read every book (reviews to come) I could get my hands on, scoured websites, went on battleground field trips and talked to other aficionados.  To this day I still have a big interest in that time period, even though not as enthusiastic. At the time of this post, the books below were free or $0.99 — please check before downloading. Authors: If you’d like  your book to be featured on Tightwad Tuesdays please email me. Battles and Leaders of the Civil War: The Struggle for Round Top (Illustrated) by Evander M. Law *Illustrated with maps and pictures of the battle and its important generals *Includes Table of Contents Without question, the most famous battle of the Civil War took place outside of the small town of Gettysburg from July 1-3, 1863. Over those three days, nearly 8,000 would die, over 30,000 would be casualties, and the most famous attack of the war, Pickett’s Charge, would fail Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. The South would go on to lose the war, and when it did, the importance of Gettysburg as one of the “high tide”…

I’m a bit of a political junky! I’m not as bad as I used to be because, to be honest, the more attention I pay the more I realized how screwed we’re getting by those in power (this is more true on a local level than the federal one). Election season is interesting, the lies, deceits, half truths and obscene amounts of money spent are jaw dropping. Frankly, I cannot see any difference in political ideology or major policies between Obama and Romney. I actually think that the staunch Republicans and staunch Democrats are not seeing a thing beyond an elephant’s ass and a donkey’s tail. After all, Obama (in the role of “The Liberal”) has governed like a conservative Republican – right of center. Romney (in the role of “The Conservative”) has governed left of center previously. So actually, the Republicans should be rooting for Obama, while the Democrats should be supporting Romney. But what do I know…? Tightwad Tuesday — Free or Affordable eBooks — Biblical Fiction

I really enjoy biblical fiction, especially about the Jewish bible. I think the stories are great, interesting  and, I hear, even teach a lesson or two. Most of the biblical fiction books I read were pretty good, some took many liberties, others didn’t but I have to say I enjoyed most of them (it is unfortunate that most of the ones I enjoyed were never translated into English). Many people miss the point of the bible, in my opinion – they either view it as literal history (which is a recent phenomena of about 100 years or so), or as a comic-book type superhero drama, or both. That is too bad since these wonderful stories are the base of which we built our society on (whether you believe them or not doesn’t matter), however over the centuries they have been bastardized to support one agenda or another, when actually they support none. Tightwad Tuesday — Free or Affordable eBooks — Military Strategy
Latest Posts , Tightwad Tuesday / August 28, 2012

Military Strategy… can books get anymore interesting? Reading about heroics in battle is the stuff which makes books exciting, but strategy is what makes them interesting. Heck, The Hunger Games is about strategy as much as the Killer Angels is even though they are two very different styles of storytelling and genre. Of course there is the grandaddy of all military strategy books, The Art of War which is being talked about today as much as it was many moons ago. The lessons in these books do not belong only on the battlefield, but in everyday life whether at home or in business. Check them out, let me know what you think. Check out the books below, I only found one for free but the rest are $0.99 at the time this post was written. Tightwad Tuesday — Free or Affordable eBooks — Graphic Novels
Latest Posts , Tightwad Tuesday / August 14, 2012

I love graphic novels. As much as I read many people assume I’m a book snob, OK – maybe, but I do appreciate the graphic novel format. I haven’t been able to figure out the eFormat of graphic novels  yet. I read a few on my nook but had to transfer them over to the computer, it simply didn’t work for me but it’s getting better. The story telling in graphic novels takes much talent and work. One cannot simply draw a picture of men in tights, it takes thought, articulation on at least two fronts (writing and drawing), sometimes three (color) and even more. Even though comics have a reputation of being for kids, many comics and graphic novels (a long comic or a collected series) are actually for adults. Believe it or not many graphic novels are written in college level English and several comic book series are the longest running publication using college English (The New York Times is written in 8th grade level English). That being said – below are a few graphic novels I found which are free (at the time of this post). Authors: If you’d like  your book to be featured on Tightwad…

Tightwad Tuesday — Free or Affordable eBooks — The Olympics
Latest Posts , Tightwad Tuesday / July 31, 2012

Welcome to another exciting edition of Tightwad Tuesday. Being that everyone … well, almost everyone, OK, some people have Olympic fever I figured I’ll have my cheap butt go out and found some fun and affordable books on the subject. I remember as a child that the Olympics were a really big deal. I lost interest as an adult and it seems that so did many other people. I can’t blame them due to NBC’s lackluster coverage (lots of hype, little content which is delayed by half a day). I think that it’s too bad, the Olympics are a wonderful event and full of spirit. Hope you enjoy. Please note: The prices for the post are current at the time of the post, please pay attention to make sure they haven’t changed before purchase.
