L. Ron Hubbard (13 March, 1911 – 24 January, 1986) was an American author of fantasy stories and science fiction. He was also the found of the Church of Scientology.

  1. Born as Lafayette Ronald Hubbard in Tilden, Nebraska as an only child to Ledora May and harry Russ Hubbard, a former officer in the U.S. Navy. During World War I, his father rejoined the Navy.
  2. At age 13, Mr. Hubbard earned his Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts.
  3. Mr. Hubbard did not do well in college, and decided it wasn’t for him.
  4. He met his wife Margaret Grubb (Polly), also a glider pilot, after he came back from Puerto Rico to Washington DC in 1933. The couple had two children Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, Jr. (Nibs) and Katherine May.
  5. The author became a well-known writer, during the 1930s because of his stories in pulp fiction magazines.
  6. Mr. Hubbard wrote in many genres, fiction, travel, mysteries, westerns and even aviation.
  7. Some of Mr. Hubbard’s associates included Robert A. Heinlein and Isaac Asimov
  8. In 1937 Mr. Hubbard published is first full-length novel, Buckskin Brigades, and in 1938 write a screen play for a Columbia Pictures serial called The Secret of Treasure Island.
  9. During a dental procedure in 1938, Mr. Hubbard reacted badly to the drug being used and had a near-death experience, allegedly inspiring an unpublished manuscript.
  10. In 1941 Mr. Hubbard was commissioned as a Lieutenant (junior grade) in the U.S. Naval Reserve, his naval career was not successful since he required constant supervision. He resigned his commission in 1950 after the publication of Dianetics.
