About: Daughters of the Night Sky by Aimie K. Runyan is a novel about the Russian women pilots of World War II known by their victims as the “Night Witches”. Ms. Runyan likes to write about history’s unsung heroes, or at least unsung in the US. 301 pages Publisher: Lake Union Publishing (January 1, 2018) Language: English ISBN-10: 1503946770 My rating for Daughters of the Night Sky– 4 Buy Daughters of the Night Sky from Amazon.com* More Books by Aimie K. Runyan Thoughts: I have heard of the Night Witches before, but I read a lot of history books and novels centered around World War II. When I saw Daughters of the Night Sky by Aimie K. Runyan on Amazon’s Prime Reading, I downloaded it almost immediately. First I like to mention that the actual history in the book is a bit sketchy, but the author owns up to that, saying she wrote a novel not a history book. While I do like my historical fiction somewhat accurate (after all, some literary license does have to be taken many times), I appreciated the acknowledgment very much. The novel is about strong women holding their own in a men’s world during a complex time of turmoil. Katya,…
I was excited from the first time I head the plans to make a standalone Felix Leiter story. With all the trepidations and pre-judgements that came with the announcement, only one thought, and one thought only, was on my mind – about damn time!
This is a two part story, the first one, as the name of the book suggests, is the story of the Nazis trying to control people’s beliefs via literature, punishment and spectacles of burning books symbolizing “wrong” ideology. The second part is the painstaking cataloging of millions of books, returning what can be returned (through notes, plates and other identifying marks).
The narrative is very absorbing and powerful, I was especially fascinated to read how decisions in the upper echelons of government impact the little person on the street who just wants a good job and a warm meal.
Born as Theodore Dostoevsky, the author had a speech impediment and couldn’t pronounce to “th” sound. He changed his name to Fyodor instead.
A very ambitious and well researched novel which tries to understand how good people simply roll over and help commit atrocities
The authors go to great length not only to tell a story, but give the reader the historical context in which the events were happening, as well as the social and political climates.
About: From Russia With Love by Ian Fleming is the 5th novel in the series featuring English spy James Bond, 007. The book was published in 1957 and is considered one of the quintessential Cold War novels. 253 pages Publisher: Fine Communications Language: English ISBN-10: 1567310532 My rating for From Russia With Love— 5 Buy From Russia With Love from Amazon.com* Books by Ian Fleming* Thoughts: From Russia With Love by Ian Fleming is considered the best in the series and, after reading it, I have to agree. While the book certainly offends modern sensibilities, it does offer a great story and a nail biting ending. The story revolves around the Soviets trying to humiliate the British Secret Service by killing their best agent, James Bond, in an embarrassing manner and hence lower morale. The plot was implausible back then, but even more now when people are not embarrassed at all anymore and even post their stupidity online for the ages. Bond is not a very sophisticated spy, sure he’s good at what he does but he rolls along with the thin plot to assassinate him, missing noticeable clues and falling into obvious traps, frankly it’s a wonder he’s…
