Thoughts:
I had no idea what to expect when I started to read Red Lanterns Vol. 1: Blood and Rage by Peter Milligan (illustrated by Ed Benes). I always liked Green Lantern as a supporting character, but never actually followed any of the story lines, unless they directly related to another I was following.
Right off the bat I was pleasantly surprised despite my initial reservation. The story and writing pulled me in immediately. The characters, old and new, were explained and given personality and depth.
The art ranged from very good to pretty good, even though I could tell some of it was done by different artists. I really didn’t notice any huge differences between the ways characters were drawn.
This graphic novel is violent, as the story is about aliens who get their powers by channeling rage and anger. There were several new (to me?) standout characters, the main one being the super-villain Bleez.
Overall I thought this was a great read. The cast of characters really made this book shine and I’m looking forward for the rest of the series, and The New 52 .
