August 21, 2015

Lucius Shepard (21 August, 1943 – 18 March, 2014) was an American author whose style defied description. The author was identified with magical realism, but in the US he was known as a science-fiction/fantasy author.

  1. Shepard was born in Lynchburg, VA but was raised in Daytona, FL.
  2. Both his parents were teachers. Mrs. Shepard taught Spanish and took the family to Latin America several times, trips which have influenced her son.
  3. Shepard’s father used threats and violence to get him to read the classics, the result was a well-read and traumatized young adult who ran away from home at age 15.
  4. Shepard’s first novel was published when he was 40 years old.
  5. Even though Mr. Shepard wrote several novels, his favorite format was the novella.
  6. In 1985 Mr. Shepard won the John W. Campbell award for best new writer in science-fiction and the Nebula award in 1986.
  7. Shepard claimed he has seen a wild black panther in the forest, which might have been, according to him, the last one in the US.
  8. He was a member of several rock bands.
  9. Shepard and his wife, Joy Wolf, enjoyed traveling and even dropped out of college several times to travel.
  10. They called their son, appropriately enough, Gulliver.
