- Shepard was born in Lynchburg, VA but was raised in Daytona, FL.
- Both his parents were teachers. Mrs. Shepard taught Spanish and took the family to Latin America several times, trips which have influenced her son.
- Shepard’s father used threats and violence to get him to read the classics, the result was a well-read and traumatized young adult who ran away from home at age 15.
- Shepard’s first novel was published when he was 40 years old.
- Even though Mr. Shepard wrote several novels, his favorite format was the novella.
- In 1985 Mr. Shepard won the John W. Campbell award for best new writer in science-fiction and the Nebula award in 1986.
- Shepard claimed he has seen a wild black panther in the forest, which might have been, according to him, the last one in the US.
- He was a member of several rock bands.
- Shepard and his wife, Joy Wolf, enjoyed traveling and even dropped out of college several times to travel.
- They called their son, appropriately enough, Gulliver.
