Hubert Selby Jr. (23 July, 1928 – 26 April, 2004) was a writer and novelist from Brooklyn, NY known for exploring the New York area.

  1. Born in Brooklyn, NY Mr. Selby attended public schools until the age of 15.
  2. The young Mr. Selby, nicknamed Cubby, became a merchant seaman, like his father. Even though he joined in 1947, he did not last long due to tuberculosis (like many other writers before him).
  3. Doctors thought Mr. Selby would survive about one year. This was due to the fact that no antibiotics were available at the time. The young man, however, went through four years of medications and survived.
  4. The medication he was given, streptomycin, was an experimental drug and caused him complications.
  5. Hubert Selby Jr. had a difficult time finding a job due to his poor health.
  6. Not working did not stop love, and Mr. Selby married Inez V. Taylor (Tiny) who worked in a department store. The couple had two children.
  7. Mr. Selby was in and out of hospitals for the next ten years, mostly bedridden he was encouraged to write by a childhood friend.
  8. Mostly writing by ear, Mr. Selby’s work is known for portraying a bleak, violent world with little concern of grammar, diction, or even punctuation.
  9. Battling with substance abuse, was in and out of trouble with the law. He moved from New York to Los Angeles where he met his second wife Suzanne Victoria Shaw.
  10. Hubert Selby Jr. passed away from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease refusing morphine on his deathbed.
