Hamlin Garland (14 September, 1860 – 4 March, 1940) was an award winning American novelist, poet, essayist, and short story writer.

  1. Born on a farm in Wisconsin, as Hannibal Hamlin Garland was the second of four kids.
  2. He was named after Abraham Lincoln’s vice president, Hannibal Hamlin.
  3. As a young man, Mr. Garland lived in several farms, but settled in Boston, MA in 1884 to become a writer.
  4. After a successful publication of short stories, as well as a biography of President Ulysses S. Grant, which was he previously serialized, Mr. Garland married Zulime Taft and began working as a teacher and lecturer.
  5. In 1917 Mr. Garland published a biography A Son of the Middle Border, the book was so successful that in 1922 he published a sequel called A Daughter of the Middle Border
  6. Garland won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1922 for A Daughter of the Middle Border.
  7. During his lifetime Mr. Garland was well known and in 1918 became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
  8. In 1929 Mr. Garland moved to Hollywood, CA.
  9. Since 1891 Mr. Garland was fascinated with the psychic phenomena and mediums. He even published the 1939 book The Mystery of the Buried Crosses to prove that such it was legitimate.
  10. The Hamlin Garland House in West Salem is a historical site.
