Edmond Rostand (1 April 1868 – 2 December 1918) was a French author and poet. He is mostly associated with his 1897 work, Cyrano de Bergerac.

  1. Edmond Eugène Alexis Rostand was born to a wealthy family in Marseille, France.
  2. Rostand studied at the Collège Stanislas in Paris. He mostly concentrated on philosophy, history, and literature.
  3. The author’s first play, Le Gant rouge, was performed at the Cluny Theatre when he was just 20 years old.
    The play, however, was almost unnoticed.
  4. Rostand published a volume of poems (Les Musardises, 1890), which gave him the opportunity to write a three-act play called Les Romanesque’s, which was a great success.
  5. The next two plays he wrote, were for the star Sarah Bernhardt. The first one, La Princesse Lointaine, was not very successful. However, the second play, Photine in La Samaritaine (1897) became part of the star’s repertoire.
    This was a big deal, as the “the Divine Sarah,” Sarah Bernhardt is recognized as the first international stage star.was the first international star of the stage.
  6. His next play, the heroic comedy Cyrano de Bergerac, was a huge hit. In fact, the first production lasted over 300 consecutive nights.
  7. Cyrano has been a boyhood hero of Mr. Rostand, and he thoroughly researched 17th Century French history.
  8. D’Artagnan, the protagonist of Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers, makes a “guest appearance” in the play Cyrano de Bergerac (Act I Scene IV).
  9. Edmond Rostand became the youngest writer to be elected to the Académie française in 1902.
  10. The house of Edmond Rostand and his wife, poet and playwright Rosemonde-Étienette Gérard, is now a heritage site and a museum.
