Alberto de Lacerda (20 September, 1928 – 27 August, 2007) was a prominent Portuguese poet and radio personality. Mr. Lacerda is considered to be Portugal’s most admired and distinguished poets.

- Carlos Alberto Portugal Correia de Lacerda was born on the Island of Mozambique. He was the son of a colonial administrator and was born in the Governor’s Palace. His family tree can be traced to include kings and cardinals.
- The future poet spent his childhood on several outposts in East Africa. The wild surroundings made a huge impression on the young man.
- He loved languages in school but did not excel in STEM subjects. At the age of 18, he was studying in Lisbon. Even at that early age, he was already a published poet.
- In 1851, Mr. Lacerda moved to London to work for the BBC. One of the first things he did in England was to go to the theater to see The Winter’s Tale by Shakespeare.
- In London he was also adopted by the literary community. One of them, Arthur Waley, helped him publish the book 77 Poems, his first collection.
- Alberto de Lacerda published 12 more poetry collections which influenced not only the Portuguese but also Brazilian modernists, as well as other poets.
- After three years at the BBC, Alberto de Lacerda worked as a journalist, educator, and translator.
- He accepted a position at the University of Texas at Austin, and there published a bilingual edition of his Selected Poems. Later he accepted a position in Boston University and was a highly regarded teacher, who was known to produce writers from his class.
- Alberto de Lacerda loved the visual arts, and was a successful collage artist who had a solo show of his work in Lisbon.
- By the time of his death from a stroke, and despite his lack of funds, he assembled an excellent collection of books, art, manuscripts, recordings and photographs.
