Thoughts:
I have been doing martial arts since I was a kid, I enjoyed the sport (yes, they are all sports and don’t let any MMA fighter or BJJ enthusiasts tell you otherwise), the energy and made many friends over the years. I think the main difference between me and other hobbyists is conditioning (I stopped for a long time and have been getting back into it with my kids but I’ll never be fit again) and the fact that I know I suck at all of them. Most martial artists suck, they just don’t know it or won’t admit it. Unless you are a professional who trains 40 – 60 hours a week you simply aren’t as good as you think you are.

I also view martial arts as a sport which builds confidence and discipline. I’m under no illusion that I can walk into a bar and take on 25 (or even two) drunk jerks. I will be able to land a few good throws or kicks and run away to safety. That being said, I cannot remember the last time I had to fight outside the dojo, but I am very proud of the many times I was able to peacefully diffuse a situation.

I’m glad I got Ultimate Conditioning for Martial Arts by Loren Landow, it is an excellent guide for conditioning and training. The author covers many subjects from power to speed to agility and even nutrition. There are many exercises and diagrams for the reader to follow.

This is a book one could flip through and use it for what they might need. You can get a comprehensive plan to add to your speed, or power. You could easily just look at the parts you need improvement on and tweak your exercise regime. Of course, this book will not teach your martial arts, and it doesn’t claim to, you need a good teacher for that, but it will help you with your pursuit of better understanding conditioning, power, speed and agility.
