Thoughts:
I got the book Great Battles for Boys: Ancients to Middle Ages (Great Battles for Boys #1) by Joe Giorello for my son (12 at the time), hoping he will find interest in it during the summer months. This is a perfect book for boys because it’s not a narrative, the chapters are independent and one can jump around and read what’s interesting without missing anything.

The author tells a straightforward story in approximately 10-12 pages, not including a page of remarks and further reading / viewing materials As in all war stories, some of the descriptions are graphic but that is to be expected.

At the end of every chapter there is a short synopsis of who fought, basically a one page biography as well as links for further reading and videos. I have no idea why the author chose include R rated movies in those lists, my only guess is that the parents are aware when the little one asks to watch 300 – after all it’s just a comic book movie based on the battle he finished reading about. A much better choice, in my opion, would have been to include the fantastic historical novel Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield.

There are several pictures and maps, even though the maps are small and ones that might be more child friendly (colorful, bigger blocks) might be more appropriate. That being said, I loved that maps are included, it tells me that the author is not looking down at the kids.

This book was an easy read, the chapters are concise and highlight the interesting parts of each battle without bogging down with too many details. I think the book is a great introduction to history and all the fascinating stories it provides.

Synopsis:
The book covers many battles and notable military leaders such as William Wallace, Julius Caesar, Leonidas, and Alexander the Great.
