Thoughts:
when I was offered a copy ofAnd Some Fell on Stony Ground: A Day in the Life of an RAF Bomber Pilot by Leslie Mann I thought it was right up my alley, the description sounded fascinating and the subject was something I wanted to know more about.
The book is a raw and unique look into the psyche of an airman during a most vulnerable time before he got his feelings sorted out. The storytelling is very passionate, claustrophobic, emotional and is a window into Mr. Mann’s soul without many filters. An excellent introduction by Richard Overy, a historian, providss context to the narrative and is well worth reading.
The story takes place over a course of about 12 hours, but much of the story is told in flashbacks and memories which are triggered by external events which the protagonist, a flier named Leslie Mason, experiences. Mason is experiencing a profound sense of loss almost every waking moment due to his luck of having survived many missions, but loosing many friends who did not have such good fortune. In his depressed state, Mason is concerned only with the present and survival, not concerned about past or future.
The novel is more of a stream of consciousness narrative about the psychological effects of a soldier which today would have probably been diagnosed with PTSD, than an adventure story. The vivid accounts of the realities of war are a fascinating read to anyone who is remotely interested in the subject.
