Theodore H. White (6 May 1915 – 15 May 1986) was a historian and journalist known for his reporting from China during World War II, as well as the series Making of the President.

Fun Facts about Theodore H. White:

  1. Theodore Harold White was born in Dorchester, Boston. He was the first of four children to Mary and David White.
  2. David White, an educated man trained as a lawyer, had to work as a rent collector for slumlords during the Great Depression. Theodore White worked early before school selling newspapers in streets.
  3. After attending Boston Latin school on a scholarship, Mr. White earned his summa cum laude B.A. in history from Harvard.
  4. Getting a job as a foreign correspondent for Time magazine, Theodore White was sent to China, covering war and famine. His time there produced the 1946 book Thunder Out of China.
  5. After publishing two novels, in 1959 Mr. White decided to use the techniques he acquired in chronicling the next Presidential campaign.
  6. The result was the book The Making of the President 1960, which made the author famous, and won him the Pulitzer Prize.
  7. The success of the book prompted the author two write similar works on 1964, 1968, and 1972 American Presidential races.
  8. In 1975 he published Breach of Faith: The Fall of Richard Nixon to high praises from the public, as well as critics.
  9. White liked to call himself “a storyteller of elections”, adding that the only thing more exciting than a presidential campaign is war.
  10. A week after John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Mr. White was asked by Jacqueline Kennedy to write an article in Life Magazine, where he was the first to refer to the Kennedy administration as “Camelot”.
