Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (28 August, 1749 – 22 March, 1832) was a German poet, novelist and playwright. Mr. Goethe is considered an iconic figure of the German Romanticism.

  1. Goethe was born in Frankfurt am, Germany.
  2. As a young man Mr. Goethe was tutored at home in the usual subjects learned at the time, but specifically in languages. He learned Latin, Greek, French, Italian, English and Hebrew among others.
  3. Young Goethe was also versed in riding, fencing and dancing.
  4. Goethe was multitalented, in addition to writing he was also a statesman, polymath, pictorial artist, theoretical physicist and biologist.
  5. His 1773 drama, Götz von Berlichingen is considered to be the Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) movement first major drama,
  6. His first novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774), created the prototype of the romantic hero.
  7. Goethe’s influences were of Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock and Homer.
  8. Goethe was a trained lawyer.
  9. Karl August, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, invited Goethe to the Weimar where he would remain for the rest of his life, holding several offices and becoming the Duke’s chief advisor.
  10. Goethe’s magnum opus is the famous tragic play Faust. Even though the play is rarely staged in its entirety (both parts), it is still considered one of the greatest works of German literature.
