Thoughts:

I previously have seen the movie, which is still one of my favorites, and when I found the book in my Little Free Library I immediately grabbed it. I didn’t know what to expect, but I honestly think that watching the wonderful movie, really helped me enjoy the book much more.

The best thing about The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle is that it knows how silly it is. Bandits who love tacos, and wizards who are also martial arts experts – maybe the author was ahead of his time?

The absurdity, however, sometimes took me out of this world of wonder and beauty. The characters, however, stayed true in both media aspects. They are kind, brave, bumbling, and of course, unforgettable. Nevertheless, the novel is heartwarming, exploring many themes of love, and loss, as well as dashes of environmentalism for good measure.

The story is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, exploring themes of love, loss, and the beauty of the natural world. I very much enjoyed the writing, and the storytelling,

The Unicorn’s quest is a typical journey, as it has many contradictions within it. Surprisingly, I did enjoy Schmendrick’s storyline much more, I’ll have to check out the rest of the series to see if he makes other appearances, or even have his own saga.

Synopsis:

Traveling throughout a magical forest, a unicorn hears hunters say she might be the last of her kind. Upon hearing this the Unicorn is driven to leave the protection of the magical forest, only to discover that humans can’t even recognize her, and only see a white mare.

The Unicorn gets captured by Mommy Fortuna’s traveling carnival, who put magical spells on animals to make them seem like magical creatures. She meets Schmendrick the magician who helps her escape and reach King Haggard’s castle, where the Unicorns’ enemy, the Red Bull, resides.
