Like many other National Geographic books, this one is a gorgeous volume with especially fantastic photography. National Geographic Photo Ark Wonders: Celebrating Diversity in the Animal Kingdom by Joel Sartore showcases the author’s collection of amazing images.
The book, in particular, represents a broad collection of art. The collection is divided into four distinct chapters: Pattern, Shape, Extra, and Attitude.
Shape is concerned with “graceful curves or sharp projectiles”. The chapter generally features many animals, from flamingos to craps, giraffes to a giant jumping stick. The photos are unlike I’ve ever seen and certainly makes one appreciate animals for all their fright and glory.
Pattern showcases spots, stripes, and colors. Of course, birds immediately come to mind, and they do get a fair amount of space. However, some animals which you wouldn’t associate with the chapter are also featured, such as seahorses, millipedes, and even certain eggs.
Extra tells of “teeth and tails, whiskers and antlers”. Surprisingly, this was a most fascinating chapter because you rarely see, not to mention think of. I enjoyed the placement of the photos, species of animals you would think have nothing in common all of the sudden seem to be distant relatives.
If Extra was the most fascinating, Attitude was a family favorite. This chapter specifically showcases anthropotheism, assigning human characteristics to animals. While we all know this to be, most likely, not the case it is, nevertheless, entertaining.
I have no clue how Mr. Sartore got these photographs, but that’s, indeed, why he has a book and I don’t. The book is undeniably a fascinating look into the animal kingdom in all its glory and majesty.
