Thoughts:
This book was a fantastic end to an excellent series. I have enjoyed reading the novellas very much, enjoyed following the fantastic characters and in the world the author built. This novel continues with the a similar narrative to the previous book where much of the story is told in flashbacks to give the reader more details and show previous events in a new light.
Last Bloom of the Jade Lotus by J. C. Kang is the longest one in the series, and rehashes some of the history from the previous books, especially the first one. We learn more about the history of the world the author created, as well as about the other characters which were not as prominent in the previous books.
Mr. Kang did a great job flipping some of the story on its head, the overarching plot and mystery have been resolved, but he certainly opened other doors for spinoffs. There is a lot more action, and sex, in this book than the previous five; it didn’t bother me but it was noticeable and a departure from the “hints” the author dropped here and there instead of flat-out descriptions.
The ending, to me, seemed rushed and I don’t know why the author felt to do so. After all, he built a world and a wonderful mystery in few words and pages, so he has the talent to tell concise stories in an excellent manner. But that’s a minor point.
I really enjoyed the series as a whole. There are many things that come together to make it a coherent story and it’s done wonderfully. I didn’t know what to expect when I bought the books, but I’m glad I did.
Synopsis:
The story revolves around Jie and Lilian’s blossoming love, while at the same time Lilian is planning a way to get herself out of the Black Lotus Clan, even considering killing Jie. In the present, Jie, Tian, and the rest are busy protecting the Empire from being overthrown.
