Thoughts:
I had no idea what to expect when I picked up Five Presidents: My Extraordinary Journey with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford by Clint Hill & Lisa McCubbin, all I knew is that it sounded interesting and right up my ally. What I got was a mesmerizing page turner which is difficult to put down.
The narrative is crisp, easy to read, and very enjoyable. Mr. Hill’s personal anecdotes and acute observations made me wish the book was twice as long. Mr. Hill memoir is an eloquent, intelligent story covering his 17 years in the Secret Service, many of them spent protecting President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon & Gerald R. Ford, as well as Vice-President Spiro Agnew.
I loved reading about these great man, who were after all just humans as we all are. Eisenhower’s legendary passion for golf, Johnson’s humane side and the pride of his roots, Agnew’s remarkable personality, and of course the lasting impact of being on the detail during which President Kennedy was assassinated.
Mr. Hill is the one jumping on the presidential limousine in those famous pictures.
The portraits of the famous men and woman in this book are a fascinating look at how they spent their time, the habits, personal relationships, as well as joys, triumphs and disappointments. Even if you’re not a history buff, this book will make a very interesting and insightful read.
