Thoughts:
If I had to describe Caged: Memoirs of a Cage-Fighting Poet by Cameron Conaway in one word it would be “honest”. I read many memoirs, some have an agenda, some should never have been written, some are boring, but not many are as open and authentic as this one.
I’m interested in all sorts of martial arts and have been involved in a few since my childhood (unlike Mr. Conaway, though, I suck at all of them) so when I saw this book on sale I picked it up immediately. It took me awhile to get to read the book, but I was not disappointed.
Mr. Cameron talks about his life, his childhood and career as an MMA fighter (he fought 3 times). In between he injects some exercise tips and his poems. While I don’t “get” poems, I certainly do appreciate them and certainly have immense respect for anyone who publishes their work for public scrutiny.
This is a gripping book with deep insights on martial arts and poetry. I thought that the book was a bit disorganized which made it, at times, difficult to follow.
