Thoughts:
After I finishing reading Among the Living by Jonathan Rabb, I was glad to have found another favorite author. The story talks about injustice and prejudice in a new way which really impacts the reader and gives one a lot to think about.
I thought the story rambled on a little bit, but overall I thought it was a good, solid story showing how tragedy can affect one person, which in turn affects many. The tragedy also doesn’t stop after the Holocaust, life was still difficult, a challenge to get through, and dealing with all sorts of people, many of whom are living only for themselves.
The story takes place in the American south, after World War II and before the Civil Rights Movement, where Jews are maybe a step above African-Americans – but just slightly. The introduction of Holocaust survivors into the era of segregation and racism shines a harsh light on society through eyes which have seen true evil.
The novel is a fine read, some of the narrative seems to stray, but I always found myself interested in Yithak Goldah, the protagonist, and his dilemma between a “broken” family to a happy life.
Synopsis:
Yitzhak Goldah survived a Nazi concentration camp in Czechoslovakia, he moved to Savannah, GA to live with his relatives Pearl and Abe Jesler. The Jeslers are part of a vivacious Jewish community in Georgia which has been there since the founding of the state (colony at the time).
The petty issues of the Jewish community in Savnnah (reform vs. conservative, etc.) are meaningless to Yizhak after what he has been through and he falls in love with Eva, a young Jewish widow. Things get complicated when Yitzhak’s finance, thought to be dead, suddenly arrives.
