I remember how much I enjoyed this combination WWII, legal thriller and thought it would be fun to read again. The cast of characters in the book is flushed out, the reader gets to know each individual of the main players in the narrative. It is amazing that the author can tell the reader much about each character in a few short sentences. Everyone in th4e book have their personality traits and faults, the Tuskegee Airman is not a cliché, the Nazis aren’t pure evil, and Hart is not a shining crusader. The book is long, sometimes a bit preachy, but that did not take away from the enjoyment of…

Martin Thoughts: I am not a fan of the fantasy genre when reading. I love the movies and TV shows, but the books just don’t resonate with me. I tried to read and listen to Lord of the Rings about five times and never made it past 150 pages. When the TV show came out, my buddy Ray gave me A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin to read. Again, I couldn’t get past 150 pages and gave it back. Sadly, a short time later, Ray passed away (he was 25 or so at the time) leaving behind a young wife. The author took his time telling the story, which is why I believe I gave up on reading the books. If you don’t know anything about the characters, you only start to figure out…

I read and enjoyed Land of Hidden Fires by Kirk Kjeldsen very much. At first I had trepidation about reading it, but I’m very glad I read the novel. Mr. Kjeldsen was kind enough to answer a few questions for me. Q. How did you prepare to tell the story of Kari, a teenage girl? A. I didn’t intend to write the novel with a teenage girl as the protagonist; I first wanted to write about the story of my great-grandfather’s brother, Anfinn Kjeldsen, who helped a downed American pilot get to Sweden during WWII. I couldn’t find enough details, though, and trying to tell what had happened with what little that I had wasn’t working for me, so I put it aside for a few years. I eventually tried it again as fiction, making the protagonist a young man about Anfinn’s age, and it started coming easier. Then I thought it might be more interesting if the main character was a teenage boy, and then a teenage girl, and the story took off. So the character sort of wrote herself, in a way, which I think all good characters do.I didn’t consciously or specifically prepare writing the story of a…
The big twist in the book comes from the characters’ actions, not a major plot twist as in many novels
The narrative is very absorbing and powerful, I was especially fascinated to read how decisions in the upper echelons of government impact the little person on the street who just wants a good job and a warm meal.

Cotton Malone is asked by the Justice Department to investigate the largest and most dangerous clandestine organization in American history, The Knights of the Golden Circle. The organization is a holdover from the American Civil War and has a cache of gold many are interested in.
This is an enjoyable and fresh story with great artwork and interesting, new characters.
