Thoughts:
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel is a vivid account of the life of Thomas Cromwell. The book starts with Cromwell as a boy, and I’d be hard pressed to think of any scenes which does not involved the protagonist. Wolf Hall refers to the seat of the Seymour family, Wulfhall and the third wife of Henry VIII, Jane.
I truly enjoyed Ms. Mantel’s writing, it is sharp, distinct and lively. The portrayal of the characters is excellent and they all come to life in her hands. Cromwell, a man who was not born into the aristocracy, is made out to be an exceptional figure who rose in prominence, Ms. Mantel makes him to be quite a heroic protagonist.
Ms. Mantel certainly did a lot of research for this book, it requires several reads to pick up on all the history, complexities, and nuisances in it. At the end of this book, the first of a planned trilogy, Thomas Cromwell is still elusive, yet real.
