Thoughts:

This was a fascinating departure from the previous books I read by John Grisham. I enjoyed the story, but the descriptions of the Pantanal, which I had visited, were, for me, the real star of the The Testament.

Troy Phelan's successful attempt to circumvent his greedy family is a final humiliation from a man none of them liked, and vice versa. The legal aspect of the book hinges on whether or not the holographic will is legal. And with billions at stake you know there are going to be challenges galore.

While I always enjoy courtroom drama, Nate O'Riley's search for Rachel Lane was captivating. Rachel intentionally disappeared into the Amazonian jungle appearing on the closest town, Corumbá, only twice a year to pick up supplies. By "closes" we're talking several days travel.

Living in a location completely off the grid might sound like hell to some, heaven to others. For Rachel it was certainly a positive which allowed her to practice her faith and attempt to convert others. She is one of the strongest women in Mr. Grisham's books and a very interesting character in her own right.

I did find the whole religious aspect of the book out of character for the author. I have no feelings about one way or the other, but I would have sworn it would fall under "Christian Books", which it still could, which might have been the author's intent. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it very much.

Synopsis:

An eccentric billionaire, Troy Phelan decided to commit suicide in a dramatic fashion. In his final act before dying, he leaves a holographic will which gives his fortune of 11 billion to his illegitimate daughter, Rachel Lane, ignoring his three wives, six children, and longtime manservant.

His lawyers are charged with protecting his will and send Nate O'Riley, a former lawyer, now recovering alcoholic to the Pantanal region in Brazil to find Rachel. But Rachel, a medical doctor, and devout Christian who found her calling with the Amazonian natives, wants nothing to do with pleasure in this realm.

Troy Phelan spent his final moments ensuring his family did not received Access Denied to his fortune. If you were designing a 'Moral Firewall' for your own legacy, what values would someone have to demonstrate to bypass your security and inherit your 'Assets'?
