Thoughts:

First and foremost, this book is an unauthorized one, so there are no pictures of this amazing show. Nevertheless, it's a well-researched, well written documentation of this transformative show which changed television animation.

I am the Night by Daniel Dockery tells the story of Batman: The Animated Series (BTAS) through the personalities involved, such as Bruce Timm and Kevin Conroy all within the context of the late 1980s, early 1990s TV landscape. The book celebrates the creators behind the show, extensively quoting them from interviews and research material.

The idea of a Batman cartoon came on the heels of the successful Tim Burton movie, which proved to Warner Bros. that society is ready for a dark version of the Dark Knight. I had no idea that the passionate development team had to fight tooth and nail not only the studio, but also censors, all while redefining the art of animation storytelling.

Did you grow up watching Batman: The Animated Series after school, or are you coming to it as an adult—and who is your absolute favorite voice performance from the show?

I watched BTAS since it aired and enjoyed it very much. I was glad that Mr. Dockery spent a lot of pages on the amazing aesthetics of the show. When it first aired, we knew we were seeing something special but couldn't really put our finger on it. Of course, we never thought we'd still be talking, appreciating the show three decades later.

The book tells an engaging story, not just of the making of BTAS, but how it changed TV and inspired other creators to do something different. I realize that making animated shows is time consuming and dense, but the book moves at a good pace, and it's very entertaining to boot.
