When I first started reading the book, I had no idea who the authors were - I just liked books about mountaineering and especially about Mt. Everest. I found their pairing to be ideal, a balance of Ms. Summers intimate knowledge of the family, and Mr. Hemmleb superb knowledge of mountaineering.
I have heard of the 1934 British Mount Everest expedition and many of the whispers, rumors and theories that went along with it. The authors look at first hand source, such as diaries and letters, and decades of field research to re-evaluates the expedition through modern science and new discoveries which adds weight to their analysis.
Regardless of who climbed first on Mt. Everest, the authors successfully give Sandy Irvine his due. Still young, he was a skilled engineer and a vital member of the expedition which deserves his place of honor in mountaineering history.
The book was also more technical than I was expecting. There's a lot of focus on the oxygen apparatus design, which while extremely important might not interest many readers. It does, however, cements Sandy Irvine's place in history. On the other hand, it slows down the adventure and fast-paced narrative.
The Everest Mystery is a gripping, fascinating book, written by top-tier experts. The authors deliver a grounded, comprehensive analysis of the fate of Ms. Summer's great-uncle (who is also a great uncle to be associated with).
