This short book focuses on a time where lews immigrated to the United States in targe numbers. Many faced economic uncertainty and antisemitism. Like immigrants today, many stuck together out of necessity, and many found their future in the garment frade.
The first thing the author admits is that there were Jewish arsonists, and much like today, struggling business owners did indeed use arson as a method to get insurance payouts for their indebted businesses.
However, the fact that arson was specifically a Jewish for profit crime was a weaponized disinformation campaign to create the myth of a Jewish Firebug. This myth became so prevalent that even insurance companies refused to insure Jewish businesses, based on the time-tested methodology of "does their name sounds Jewish?". The irony is that when there was a crime, the insurance companies were many times a willing participant.
Much like today, a narrative was built by weaponizing and manipulating data. Insurance companies and fire investigators used hearsay and anecdotes to frame the narrative they wanted to convey. This narrative fed into their investigations, which, of course led to more arrests of Jews and reinforced their biases.
This narrative, reminiscent of the blood libels which plagued European Jews for centuries, encouraged immigrants and American Jews to put up a fight. The community started to self-police itself, guarding themselves from being labeled as arsonists due to the misdeeds of a few.
As mentioned previously, there were Jewish arsonists, but they were a small participant in this dangerous scam, but they grabbed most of the headlines. Mr. Marx wrote a meticulously researched book, about a very short time in American history which addresses the issues of disinformation and misinformation, and racial profiting in an era before computers and the Internet were even invented.
