Tightwad Tuesday — Free or Affordable eBooks — Graphic Novels

August 14, 2012

I love graphic novels.
As much as I read many people assume I’m a book snob, OK – maybe, but I do appreciate the graphic novel format. I haven’t been able to figure out the eFormat of graphic novels yet. I read a few on my nook but had to transfer them over to the computer, it simply didn’t work for me but it’s getting better.

The story telling in graphic novels takes much talent and work. One cannot simply draw a picture of men in tights, it takes thought, articulation on at least two fronts (writing and drawing), sometimes three (color) and even more. Even though comics have a reputation of being for kids, many comics and graphic novels (a long comic or a collected series) are actually for adults. Believe it or not many graphic novels are written in college level English and several comic book series are the longest running publication using college English (The New York Times is written in 8th grade level English).

That being said – below are a few graphic novels I found which are free (at the time of this post).

CRIME AND CONSEQUENCES: A Story Minute Selection (Reformatted) by Carol Lay (Author, Illustrator), William Glass (Editor)

CRIME AND CONSEQUENCES: A Story Minute Selection (Reformatted)
by Carol Lay (Author, Illustrator), William Glass (Editor)

“I dig Carol Lay’s work because it’s weird yet friendly yet disturbing yet funny — a good combination.” — Matt Groening

“Carol Lay does these docu-fables that mix deadpan fantasy with stoic, understated reality. She writes and draws (splendidly) in a cartoon monotone that masks the wit, intelligence, and reflective anger that hums beneath the surface. It’s a pleasure to know she’s around.” — Jules Feiffer

“If he has a conscience he will suffer for his mistake. That will be punishment — as well as his prison.” –Fyodor Dostoevsky

This one dreamed of becoming a serial killer. That one just wanted get rid of an annoying idiot. Those there planned perfect murders. One guy thought to find a way to protect himself from the world’s evils; another, how to escape his own karma. CRIME AND CONSEQUENCES is a selection of STORY MINUTES strips about people who thought they were going get away with it.

STORY MINUTE told twelve-paneled stories designed to be read in about a minute. It ran for almost twenty years in the L.A. WEEKLY and other weekly and daily newspapers. It offered fables, stories about relationships and the foibles of the media, peeks into the competitive undercurrents within families, arched-eyebrow looks at humanity’s self-destructive impulses, and scenes of the skirmishes between infallible fortune teller Madame Asgar and that less-than-competent devil, Nick.
The later, more-loosely-structured, WAYLAY strip continued Story Minute tropes while allowing Carol to comment on 9/11 (and the subsequent Bush Era), and to offer glimpses into her own world and life.
