About:
The Family Affair by Leon H. Gildin is the fictional continuation of his award The Polski Affair. Like its predecessor this is a short book, but one that packs in impact.

Thoughts:
The Family Affair by Leon H. Gildin (website) follows the next generation of characters from his previous book, The Polski Affair (my thoughts). This generation, sons and daughters of holocaust survivors, tries to research the past their parents struggle so hard to forget.
I thought this was a good book with strong emotions about family and friends. The story is not a cookie cutter “feel good” one, but it seems more realistic, I wouldn’t be surprised if the author based this story on actual events.
There are several messages in the book, some things take time to heal, some things never heal and sometimes, learning about one’s family could be a painful process with no recourse.
This book is well written and the new characters which are introduced, or those that were minor characters in The Polski Affair are well written and multi-dimensional. I would recommended to read The Polski Affair first (see promotional offer at the top) as it would give you a good background on the characters, their dilemmas and inner feelings.
Synopsis:
The book starts where The Polski Affair ended, Anna, the protagonist from the previous book, has learned to deal with her role as being an unwilling mistress to the hotel’s Nazi commander and lives her life peacefully. However, Anna’s son is doing his doctorate thesis on The Hotel Polski and learns about his mother’s role as well as his father’s.
Things quickly start going downhill, add to that the horrors from the Yom Kippur War and a young country trying to recover. The benefits from the learning of the past also can also do harm and some of that harm cannot be repaired.
