I’ve never read any of Mr. Currie’s books before, but the title and synopsis sounded good so I gave it a shot. I was not disappointed, the story is a straight up crime fiction, and the writing is right up my alley.
This family saga is brutal, sweet, and best of all filled with dark, grim humor. It reminded me ofWe, the Drowned, one of my favorite books which I still remember years after I read it.
The Savage, Noble Death of Babs Dionneby Ron Currie Jr is a character driven story about people dealing with tragic events in their lives, as wells as racism, addiction, and mental health issues. We read about the central figure of Babs Dionee mainly through the eyes of those around her, especially her daughter Lori, which is really the novel’s central figure.
Each of the characters has his or hers flows. They are all morally gray much like the rest of humanity and are well written. It seemed amazing to me how much talent Mr. Currie has to tell us so much about a person in just a few lines. The supernatural aspect of the book helped to move the narrative along, while not overburdening the story.
A cynical, poetic, funny and very powerful novel which stayed with me for a while after I finished reading. While the story is about a crime family committing crimes, even though they think they’re helping the community, that all takes a back seat to the wonderful characterization.
Synopsis:
Bab Dionee is a loving grandmother, strict mother, and the iron fisted leader of a drug ring supplying product to Waterville, Maine. Together with her daughter and lifelong friends, she controls the flow of drugs into Little Canada.
Sis, Bab’s daughter is missing, whether or not it has anything to do with The Man who is working for the kingpin is unclear. Meanwhile Bab’s other daughter, Lori, is a veteran with PTSD who might be able to talk to ghosts.
