Thoughts:
I really wanted to like The Race for Paris by Meg Waite Clayton, but to my dismay the novel simply didn’t work for me. I enjoyed the descriptions of the war and it’s clear that the author did a lot of research into the subject of female journalists in World War II.
I didn’t care about the main characters or about their interpersonal relationships and love triangles. For a book with the word “race” in the title, it was certainly very slow and got bogged down early and often.
One of the things which really bothered me since the beginning (and it could be only in the preview copies) is that the author goes to great lengths to describe photographs taken, instead of just showing us. They don’t even have to be vintage photographs, with today’s technology it’s pretty east to recreate them.
I am happy that the author brought the attention to the women journalists of World War II, an important subject indeed. I’m going to pick up a few biographies to learn more about them.
