Ray Bradbury is one of the science fiction pioneers who cleverly envisaged a brand new world and its reliance on cutting-edge technologies. In his famous dystopian novel Fahrenheit 451 – published way back in 1953 – Bradbury predicted a wide range of high-tech phenomena that turned out to be true a few decades later.

A lot of things we see and use on a daily basis may seem common and familiar in 2020, but the situation was totally different some 70 years ago. So, what is it that Ray Bradbury talked about back then? Here is the list of five true Ray Bradbury’s predictions about future technologies.

  1. Social networking
Do you know that over three billion people worldwide use social networks such as Facebook and Instagram? Social networking is quite a big deal in the 21st century, but guess who talked about it first? You are right – the answer is “Ray Bradbury.” His seminal work describes how people interact with each other through the wall, thus creating a network of digital friends. This is essentially what modern social platforms are all about – making friends and establishing contacts in the digital environment.

  1. Social isolation and alienation
Bradbury’s short story “The Pedestrian” talks about families obsessed with television and individuals who get arrested for not owning a TV. Bradbury criticizes the isolation and alienation coming from the fact that people spend most of their time watching TV screens rather than living their lives in the real-world ambiance.
This is exactly what’s going on today as millions of people live their lives without talking to anyone, without nurturing relationships with friends and family, and without having any meaningful social contact whatsoever.

  1. Autonomous vehicles
The same short story (The Pedestrian) features autonomous cars that drive around independently and even come with self-thinking abilities. Although we are still not witnessing the same level of car autonomy, we do have more than enough examples proving Ray Bradbury’s viewpoint.Take the Tesla Autopilot for instance. It is an advanced driver-assistance system feature offered by Tesla that has lane centering, adaptive cruise control, self-parking, the ability to automatically change lanes, navigate autonomously on limited access freeways, and the ability to summon the car to and from a garage or parking spot.

  1. Electronic surveillance
Another concept Ray Bradbury warned us about is electronic surveillance. In his dystopian vision of social control, Bradbury predicted the rise of video surveillance. For example, video cameras – also known as closed-circuit television – are becoming a more and more widespread feature of American life. But it’s very a dangerous concept for a variety of reasons. First of all, it is not nearly as effective as it is supposed to be, while it is also susceptible to abuse. Most of all, Bradbury warned us that video surveillance has a tremendous impact on human rights and freedoms.

  1. Media sensationalism
Ray Bradbury also predicted the way journalists are going to report about important events, criticizing continuous sensationalism and fake news. It’s a big issue in 2020 because people can hardly distinguish lies from truth and decide who to trust these days.

Conclusion

Ray Bradbury is not only a novelist but also a prophet with a powerful imagination and prediction abilities. In this post, we discussed five of his true predictions about future technologies.
