Thoughts:

The first thing I noticed about Wonder Woman, Volume 1: The Lies by Greg Rucka (art by Liam Sharp, lettered by Jodi Wynne, penciled by Matthew Clark, inked by Sean Parsons, colored by Laura Martin & Jeremy Colwell) is the wonderful artwork. Mr. Sharp’s art is gorgeous, the African landscapes and Greek backgrounds are awesome.

The story itself is good, I enjoyed it and thought it was an imaginative take on a character, which like many other DC superheroes, is difficult to write for. The story was an introduction and there is simply no resolution to the main plot. I thought the subplot with Cheetah was fine and certainly pushed the narrative forward.

I liked this book even though it wasn’t meant for me. Wonder Woman is coming back with a vengeance as a symbol of female empowerment, as she was always meant to be. That being said, I felt this graphic novel was more about how other people react to Wonder Woman, and less about her.

I enjoyed the interactions with Cheetah and continues with a whole bunch of magic non-sense. The parts with Steve Trevor (a tough-as-nails special ops soldier in this incarnation) were, to me, much more interesting.

I really want to like this series, and would continue to read it, but I hope it gets better.

Synopsis:

Wonder Woman is out to find out who she really is by going back to her home, only that the place no longer exist. Surprisingly, Wonder Woman aligns herself with Cheetah, her enemy, to shed light on her secrets.
