Thoughts:
This graphic novel caught my eye because of the cover. I have never read a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles graphic novel before. I do, of course, know all about TMNT and have watched a few of the cartoons and several of the movies.
This graphic novel walks a fine line between telling a mature story with ridiculous characters and telling a dark story geared toward adults. On that aspect, I feel that the creators have succeeded, the graphic novel feels gritty, with a sense of the unknown in every page.
The story, I felt, was a bit confusing, I’m not a TMNT fan and this is an Elseworlds-type tale so it’s not because I didn’t follow years of storylines.
The art, as magnificent as it was, didn’t drive the story forward as much as I usually like in a graphic novel. Paragraphs of text could have been saved with the help of one or two panels. Esau Escorza, Isaac Escorza, and Ben Bishop are award-worthy. It looks both familiar and fresh, I honestly can’t put my finger on it but I enjoyed it very much. The action is fluid, and one can tell they’re in New York City right off the bat.
I can tell the influence the great Jack Kirby and Frank Miller had on the creative team. The book has a feeling of a Daredevil / Dark Knight Returns amalgam.
And frankly, it works!
Despite all the great things about The Last Ronin by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, and Tom Waltz I felt that the story was uneven. Some of the sections were fantastic, others seemed like an unfinished concept.
Synopsis:
