Thoughts:
Monstress Volume 1: Awakening by  Marjorie M. Liu (author) and Sana Takeda (Illustrator) is a wonderful epic combining fantasy and Japanese monster genre (kaijū) from a very talented team. This graphic novel is a collection of issues 1 through 6. The first thing I noticed when opening up the graphic novel is the gorgeous artwork, which immediately captures your attention and moves the story forward with every panel.

The graphic novel is for mature audience, there is plenty of violence and some nudity. The story is poignant and intense. The world the creators made is a miserable, dark world ruled by prejudice, death and fear.

This a lavish book which takes Easter and Western elements to create a wonderful, fresh story. The story moves quickly and is immensely enjoyable and imaginative.

Synopsis:
Maika Halfwolf, an Arcanic, is the survivor of a violent war between humans and Arcanics. Maika seeks out to find more about her mother, but as her power grows she feels that she is being destroyed from the inside.

Maika infiltrates Zamara, as a slave, where human witches capture Arcanic slaves to experiment on.
