Thought:

The first I heard that there were famous Jewish pirates, was when I picked up Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean, a solid history book. José and the Pirate Captain Toledano by Arnon Z. Shorr fictionalize this history, to tell a tale of adventure without reservation.

This is certainly a fascinating book, telling part of Jewish history which has been ignored for decades, maybe even centuries. The graphic novel would be interesting for kids and adults too. It is obviously catering to the younger crowd; however, it does not talk down to the reader.

The author explicitly tackles several important topics in this graphic novel, some overtly, others in between the panels. Religion, anti-Semitism, coming of age, discovery, love, as well as family, and loyalty, are some of them.

The artwork by Joshua M. Edelglass is very good, dynamic, and entertaining. The panels move the story along and are detailed, as well as colorful.

José and the Pirate Captain Toledano is an enjoyable story, with some bit of history, and generally plenty of fun. A book which is both entertaining and with a purpose.

Synopsis:

The life of José Alfaro, a teen in Santo Domingo during the 16th Century, is about to turn upside-down. When the Spanish inquisition comes to town, José discovers he and his family are Jewish, and, of course, has to escape.

Boarding the pirate ship Laqish, José learns the way of the pirates. Along the way he realizes that the fearsome Captain Toledano is also Jewish.
