Thoughts:
I read Harley Quinn and Power Girl a few weeks ago and was looking forward to read Harley Quinn Vol. 2: Power Outage (The New 52) by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti (illustrated by Chad Hardin) since I enjoyed the first one so much. I thought it would be fun to see how the previous graphic novel came about, even though I realize that I’m reading them in a backward order.
Unlike Harley Quinn and Power Girl, this graphic novel is a collection of stories which are loosely related. I thought the quality of the stories and art went back and forth. I enjoyed the stories were the fourth wall is being broken and Harley is out in the real world, my favorite was the story where she goes to Comic-Con, it was very funny and I’m sure there were many gags I didn’t even get (bonus points for including Bruce Timm and Paul Dini).
Some of the jokes were funny, especially the ones poking fun at Marvel, but after a while I got tired of boob and butt jokes, too bad because the book had some great laughs and didn’t need to get repetitive. I’m sure the comics books stand on their own, but I though the graphic novel, as a whole, lacked a certain direction.
I enjoy the New 52 revamp of many characters, I’m glad that DC took Harley in a new direction instead of being the just The Joker’s abused girlfriend. Despite some flaws this is still an enjoyable, lighthearted book.
