Thoughts:
Luck and Circumstance: A Coming of Age in Hollywood, New York, and Points Beyond by Michael Lindsay-Hogg (Facebook | IMDB) is a refreshing and amusing book in which the author talks about his lifelong haunts with honesty. The author might or might not be the son of Orson Welles, an imposing figure which comes and goes through-out Mr. Lindsay-Hogg’s life in a way which makes him seem both benevolent and detached.

I am the first one to say that if you screwed up and didn’t die, that still doesn’t merit a memoir. However, Mr. Lindsay-Hogg’s book gives credit to circumstances and talent. That being said, one could argue that luck means the gods favors you, much like the Romans believed.

The name Michael Lindsay-Hogg might not be familiar to many, but many more are at least familiar with his body of work and appreciate his contributions to the entertainment industry. The author’s anecdotes about the fascinating people he had worked with, his little behind the scenes stories of Hollywood and the New York theatre scene are exactly the kind which make memoirs worth reading.

What I haven’t learned from the author’s remarkable attitude is how he feels towards his mother, actress Geraldine Fitzgerald, who is a big part of the book. Of course he loves her, which comes across loud and clear, but the constant secrecy about his paternity would have driven me insane.

Mr. Lindsay-Hogg‘s melodic book about his quest is interesting, but his fascinating observations about such notables as Mick Jagger and The Beatles is unique and unequivocal. The author’s store and these observations make this book something unique, a memoir everyone will find in something they like.
