Thoughts:
The Book of Zev by Marilyn Horowitz is sometimes funny, sometimes thoughtful but mostly and interesting and fast read. Even though the plot is bizarre, I found the analysis of the characters’ inner most feelings to be interesting in bringing their trials and tribulations to move the story along.

Both of the main characters question their belief in G-d, as every good Jew does, but do not receive any answers, as any good Jew expects. However, their introspective inner conflict and analysis of belief system is certainly one of the highlights of the novel.

Even though the author relies on amazing coincidences more than my liking, I thought he plot moved quickly and it is very well written and entertaining. This book is certainly a commendable effort and worthy of book club discussions about human existence and our relationship to G-d.

Synopsis:
Zev Bronfman, an angry atheist who was brought up in a Hassidic home escapes death from a falling beam. This near death experience was a wakeup call for Zev, who leaves his parents for a not-so-lucrative job as a cab driver in New York City.

Sarah Hirshbaum is a bitter and depressed divorcee who makes her living as a kosher chef, hates G-d but loves her wine and yoga. Zev and Sarah consult the same psychic who is guided by an angel and mistakenly receive the tapes of each other’s sessions. When they meet, Zev discovers that Sarah has been recruited by the Mossad to assassinate an old friend who is now threatening world peace.
