Thoughts:
The Anatomy Lesson by Nina Siegal is a fascinating book telling how a masterpiece was being painted. I enjoyed the overall concept and the different perspective the author brings to the book.

Ms. Siegal wrote a great story on how different pieces of a puzzle go into creating a masterpiece. The reader gets to view the events through six distinct voices, The Eyes of Rembrandt, through The Hands of Dr. Tulp, president of the Surgeon’s Guild, the point of view of The Body, Adriaen the excited criminal who was dissected, The Heart (of The Body), the pregnant Flora, The Mouth, Fletchet, who got the corpse and a man who does jobs others don’t want to do, The Mind of Descartes, the philosopher and scientist, as well as a modern-day conservator, Pia.

I enjoyed reading about each of the well-developed characters and their back-story. Along with the creative story, the reader gets a sense of 17th Century Holland and what it was like to live during that time.

The ending of the book, though, seemed to be rushed and not as creative as the rest of the novel. I could have also done without the commentary from the Pia, the modern-day conservator, I don’t think her sections added anything to the story.

I truly enjoyed reading this novel, it was fascinating and engaging. A creative story about creative people creating a well-known masterpiece.
