Thoughts:
Midnight Blue by Simone van der Vlugt is an easy read, an engaging story which doesn’t take much effort but very enjoyable. I enjoyed learning about 17th Century Netherlands, even though some of the phrasing seemed odd but I will choke that up to the translation.
I thought many of the characters, especially the protagonist, Catrin, acted in a way which I would not have thought women in the mid-1600s acted. The little art history and guest appearances by famous Dutch artists of the time were interesting, and a wink towards modern day readers who know the future success of those struggling.
I thought that this was a lovely book which doesn’t pretend to be what it isn’t. This is a small story about a short period in Dutch history while their famous pottery is becoming prevalent, figuring out how to match quality with imports while making it their own.
Synopsis:
Catrin, a young widow leaves her small Dutch village to get away from gossip and look for better job prospects. Catrin finds a job in the house of a rich merchant and through a series of lucky breaks she manages to get a job using her artistic talent during the starting stages of Dutch blue and white pottery.
