Thomas Hood (23 May 1799 – 3 May 1845) was an English writer and humorist. He has been called “the finest English poet” of his generation.

- Thomas Hood was born in London, England. The family lived about his father’s bookshop.
- When Thomas Hood the Elder passed away, his mother, Elizabeth Sands, moved the family to an area in inner-city London called Islington, There he met a teacher that appreciated his talent and took him under his wing.
- Thomas Hood was never very healthy. He left his tutor at age 14 and started working in an office, but his health suffered even more especially when he got into engraving.
- Eventually he went to Scotland to stay with his father’s family. He got better being outdoors, and started reading everything he could. While in Dundee, Mr. Hood started seriously writing poetry and was saw his name in print for the first time in a letter to the Editor of theDundee Advertiser.
- Soon enough, Thomas Hood started contributing humors pieces to local newspapers and magazines.
- He wrote in block letters, believing that it helped him write better and understand his faults. He certainly was onto something, in the same time Samuel Taylor Coleridge recommended the same thing.
- In 1824 Thomas Hood married Jame Reynolds. They had two children who lived to adulthood Tom Hood, humorist and playwright, and children writer Frances Freeling Broderip. The Hood family was very close and loving as letters from the time prove.
- Close or not, Thomas Hood loved practical jokes and enjoyed pulling them on his family.
- Thomas Hood started his own magazine, mostly to publish his own works. He was sick at the time and wrote from bed, in which he died.
- After his death, Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel granted him a pension of £100 which sustained his wife. Jane Hood, also very sickly, took great care of her husband during his illness, but died 18 months after him.
