Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796) was a Scottish poet and lyricist. Many people consider him the national poet of Scotland.

Fun Facts about Robert Burns:

  1. Other names Robert Burns has used are Rabbie Burns, the Ploughman Poet, and the Bard of Ayrshire.
  2. He was the oldest of seven children, in a house built by his father (not the Burns Cottage Museum).
  3. Burns got most of his schooling from his father, a tenant farmer, who taught his kids reading, geography, history, writing, and math.
  4. At age 15 Mr. Burns wrote his first poem.
  5. Along with Scots, Mr. Burns also write in English and English with a Scots dialect.
  6. The poet had 12 children, nine of which were with his wife Jean Armour.
  7. During the French Revolution, Mr. Burns was in favor of the reforms proposed.
  8. After Queen Victoria and Christopher Columbus, Mr. Burns has the most memorials, monuments, and statues dedicated to him.
  9. One of his most famous songs, Auld Lang Syne, was part of more than 100 songs he wrote to a book called The Melodies of Scotland.
  10. In 2009 views of Scottish TV voted Mr. Burns as “The Greatest Scot”.
