Remy de Gourmont (4 April, 1858 – 27 September, 1915) was a French poet, critic, and novelist. He was well known, and widely read during his lifetime.

- Remy de Gourmont was born in a commune in the Orne department in northwestern France called Bazoches-au-Houlme.
- His parents, Count Auguste-Marie de Gourmont and his countess, born Mathilde de Montfort were publishers.
- By 1879 Mr. de Gourmont graduated with a law degree and moved to Paris.
- Two years later, while being employed at France’s National Library, Bibliothèque nationale, he began to write for periodicals such asLe Monde.
- This is when met French artist and model Berthe de Courrière. The two lived together for the rest of their lives.
- Remy de Gourmont was stricken and disfigured by Lupus vulgaris, painful skin lesions and disappeared from public view. His health declined until his death, partially due to his severe depression when World War I began.
- du Gourmont’s novel, A Virgin Heart, was translated to English in 1922 by Aldous Huxley.
- In 1891 he publishedPatriotism, a toy(Le Joujou Patriotisme), which was politically charged. As a result he lost his job at the Bibliothèque nationale.
