Tomorrow we are celebrating the birth of two important people who each changed the world in their own unique ways. One of these people is author Raymond Chandler (July 23, 1888 – March 26, 1959), creator of the detective Philip Marlowe.

2) He worked as a freelance journalist for several newspapers after college.
3) Chandler served during World War I in the Royal Flying Corps.
4) After the war Chandler moved to California.
5) In California, Chandler was the director of … independent oil companies.
6) Chandler started writing at age 45 because he lost his job during the depression.
7) The pulp magazine “Black Mask” was the first to publish his stories.
8 ) Chandler’s first novel, “The Big Sleep” was published in 1939.
9) In his lifetime, Chandler only seven novels, but also wrote several screenplays.
10) William Faulkner wrote the screen play for “The Big Sleep”, in which Humphrey Bogart played Philip Marlowe.

Thanks for sharing this on Chandler-I think I might post on his short story "Killer in the Rain" now that I know today is his birthday-it will be my first Chandler read but I have seen the movies based on this books-
I'm surprised to learn he only wrote 7 novels. I like the fact that he didn't start writing til 45. Gives me hope :)
