Ralph Hodgson (9 September, 1871 – 2 November, 1962) was an English poet who was considered to be one of the purest lyricists of his time.

  1. Ralph Hodgson was born in Darlington, County Durham. His father was a coal miner.
  2. Hodgson worked in numerous London publications. After a time, he became the editor of Fry’s Weekly Magazine of Sports and Out-of-Door Life.
  3. The poet also worked as a cartoonist, signing his work as “Yorick”.
  4. The first time the poet was published was in 1907, with The Last Blackbird, and Other Lines. He was 36 years old.
  5. His talent and verse immediately catapulted him to the school of prominent, but loosely connected, poets known as the Georgians.
  6. Hodgson moved to Japan to each English literature at Sendai University.
  7. In 1938, he received the Order of the Rising Sun from the Japanese government,
  8. The poet was married three times. His first wife passed away, he met his second marriage ended in divorce. He met his third wife, Aurelia Boliger in Japan. Ms.Boliger was a missionary from Canton, Ohio.
  9. The quintessential Yorkshireman moved to a small farm in Minerva, OH and spent the rest of his life there.
  10. Ralph Hodgson valued his privacy, very little is known about him despite the fame and accolades he achieved.
