Pearl S. Buck (26 June, 1892 – 6 March 1973) was an American author who wrote a lot about the Eastern culture. She was committed to improve the relations between the US and China.

1. Pearl Buck was born as Pearl Sydenstricker. Her parents were Presbyterian missionaries and she grew up in China.
2. The Sydenstrickers returned to their home in West Virginia after losing all but two of their children to tropical disease, but soon returned.
3. The Sydenstrickers lived in a Chinese village (unlike other missionaries), hence Pearl spoke Chinese before she learned English.
4. The author’s husband, John Lossing Buck, was an American agricultural specialist.
5. She a Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Good Earth.
6. She was also the first female to win a Nobel Prize for Literature.
7. Buck was very protective of her private life, mainly to protect her mentally disabled daughter Carol.
8. Buck’s autobiography, My Several Worlds, does not mention her husband or parents. The book is a detailed account, however, of the life of a parent of a disabled child.
9. In the late 1940s MRs. Buck also wrote a trilogy under the pen name John Sedges.
10. More than 100 works are attributed to Pearl S. Buck and over three hundred awards for her humanitarian efforts on behalf of improved race relations worldwide.
