Marguerite Yourcenar (8 June, 1903 – 17 December, 1987) was an award winning novelist. Ms. Yourcenar written in French, but was born in Belgium.

  1. Yourcenar was born in Brussels, her given name is Marguerite Antoinette Jeanne Marie Ghislaine Cleenewerck de Crayencour.
  2. Her mother, Fernande de Cartier de Marchienne, was of Belgian nobility. Unfortunately she died 10 days after giving birth.
  3. The family lived in a family estate for the first nine years of Ms. Yourcenar life where she had a pet lamb and a pet goat whose horns were painted gold.
  4. Yourcenar taught herself Latin, ancient Greek, English, and Italian.
  5. The author published her first novel, Alexis in 1929.
  6. She spent most of her adult life in the United States with her life partner Grace Frick.
  7. She was addressed by people who knew her, including friends as Madame.
  8. Yourcenar was the first woman ever inducted into the Académie Française (1980).
  9. In her honor the bathroom labels were changed to “Messieurs|Marguerite Yourcenar”.
  10. Yourcenar and Frick’s house, Petite Plaisance in Mount Desert Island is now a museum dedicated to the author.
