Louis Auchincloss (27 September, 1917 – 26 January, 2010) was a novelist, historian, and essayist from New York.

  1. Louis Stanton Auchincloss was born in Lawrence, NY to a wealthy and privileged family.
  2. Mr. Auchincloss knew how lucky he was to grow up among the fortunate, but he always marinated that “There was never an Auchincloss fortune…each generation of Auchincloss men either made or married its own money“.
  3. At Yale University he was the editor of the Yale Literary Magazine, however he never graduated from Yale, but from the University of Virginia law school.
  4. Many of Mr. Auchincloss’ books are of a multi-generational sagas involving New England society.
  5. At the beginning of his career the author wrote under the nom de plume of Andre Lee, one of his ancestors known for cursing, smoking, and drinking.
  6. During World War II the author served in the US Navy.
  7. During his life, Mr. Auchincloss was president and chairman of the Museum of New York, as well as president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
  8. Mr. Auchincloss wrote more than 60 books.
  9. In 2005 the author received the National Medal of Arts from President George W. Bush.
  10. Together with his wife, Adele Burden Lawrence, the couple had three children.
