Julien Green (6 September, 100 – 13 August, 1998) was a prolific American writer of novels, essays, plays, and even a biography. Mr. Green was born in France, and wrote in both French and English.

  1. Julien Hartridge Green was born in Paris to American parents. He was the youngest of seven children.
  2. He was named after Julian Hartridge, who served as a member of the House of Representatives of the Confederate States of America as the gentleman from Georgia, an ancestor of his mother.
  3. Edward Green, his father, was born in Virginia and was employed in France by the Southern Cotton Oil Company. Mrs. Green chose France over German thinking they’d be more sympathetic to Americans who support the Confederacy.
  4. At the beginning of World War I, 1917, the 16-year-old Julien volunteered to drive an ambulance with the American Red Cross. However, when his ruse was discovered, his enlistment was terminated.
  5. Never one to give up, as he turned 18 he enlisted in the French Army as a second lieutenant in an artillery unit.
  6. After the war, Mr. Green studied at the University of Virginia, where he started to write fiction, and write in English.
  7. In 1922, he returned to France and started writing reviews and sketches. Mr. Green published his first novel, Mont-Cinère, in 1926
  8. During World War II, Julien Green managed to obtain visas to himself and his partner to the United States. At first they stayed in Baltimore with his cousin, but in 1942 he started working for the Office of War Information broadcasting to France as part of radio’s Voice of America. Returning to France in 1945, he discovered that a friend kept all his manuscripts.
  9. During his life, he received many honors on both sides of the Atlantic, a tribute his tremendous body of work.
  10. Julien Green was the first non-French to be elected to the Académie française in 1971. Mr. Green’s name can be written as Julien (French) or Julian (English). It is Julian on his tombstone.
